Description / 1838 50C J-72 Pattern PCGS PR64

A scarce and visually compelling early silver pattern, this 1838 Half Dollar Judd-72 is certified PCGS Proof 64 and offers the kind of combination of rarity, historic importance, and exceptional eye appeal that advanced pattern collectors actively pursue.

Struck in Philadelphia, the issue represents an important experimental entry in the formative era of United States pattern coinage. The obverse features the familiar Capped Bust motif facing left, with LIBERTY inscribed on the headband and the date 1838 below, all encircled by thirteen stars and a beaded border. The reverse displays a boldly rendered eagle perched with wings raised, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination HALF DOLLAR beneath. The design is at once recognizably tied to the circulating half dollar coinage of the period and distinctly pattern in character, reflecting the Mint’s search for refined artistic and technical expression.

The present Proof 64 example is particularly appealing. Both sides exhibit sharply defined central detail and smooth, carefully preserved fields consistent with the assigned grade. Rich antique surfaces are enlivened by handsome multicolored toning in shades of violet, blue, russet, copper-gold, and soft rose, especially evident across the reverse and around the peripheral devices. The eye appeal is decidedly above average for the issue, with the contrast between the deeper fields and the warm, original patina giving the coin an elegant cabinet presence.

Judd-72 patterns from this period occupy a special place in the U.S. series. Produced during a time of experimentation at the Philadelphia Mint, these pieces reflect the evolving artistry and manufacturing practices that would shape later federal coinage. Early half dollar patterns are avidly collected not only by dedicated pattern specialists, but also by type collectors and students of the Capped Bust series who appreciate their connection to one of the most popular and historically significant silver denominations in American numismatics.

This piece is notably scarce in all grades and especially desirable at the near-Gem Proof level. PCGS reports a population of just 8 examples in PR64, with only 7 graded finer, underscoring its select status within the certified census. With so few available to collectors and sustained demand for attractive, problem-free early patterns, examples such as this are encountered infrequently on the market.

An important and beautifully toned certified 1838 half dollar pattern, this Judd-72 is a premium collectible that will hold strong appeal for the advanced student of early U.S. coinage.
