Description / 1865 $3 Three Dollar PCGS MS98

A fascinating Civil War–era Three Dollar gold piece, certified by PCGS as Genuine, Repaired – XF Detail, and offering the always-popular 1865 Philadelphia issue from one of the most distinctive denominations in American numismatics.

Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features Liberty in left-facing profile wearing a feathered headdress inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The reverse presents the denomination and date, 3 DOLLARS 1865, enclosed within a graceful agricultural wreath of corn, wheat, cotton, and tobacco, tied with a ribbon below. The type is immediately recognizable and remains unlike any other regular-issue United States gold coin, combining compact format with elegant, sharply individualized design elements.

This example displays pleasing medium to rich yellow-gold color with substantial remaining detail for the assigned Extremely Fine detail level. Liberty’s portrait retains strong central definition, and the reverse wreath remains bold and attractive, with the denomination and date clearly impressed. As noted by PCGS, the coin has been repaired, and the surfaces show evidence of past handling and restoration consistent with the designation. Even so, the piece presents as an honest collectible example with solid overall eye appeal for a scarce type that is frequently encountered with problems. The warm color and easily appreciable design detail contribute to its desirability.

The Three Dollar gold series has long held a special place among collectors of U.S. gold. Struck from 1854 through 1889, the denomination was created to facilitate the purchase of sheets of 100 three-cent stamps, though it never achieved broad commercial usefulness. As a result, the series saw limited circulation and modest mintages, making it a perennial favorite among type collectors and specialists alike. The 1865 issue is especially evocative, as it was struck in the closing year of the Civil War, linking it to one of the most important periods in United States history.

Within the series, the 1865 Three Dollar gold piece is a better-date Philadelphia issue with a notably low mintage by ordinary gold-coin standards. Civil War gold coinage enjoys enduring demand across multiple collecting categories, including date runs, type sets, and historical-era sets. Problem-free examples are especially prized, but certified details pieces such as this provide an appealing and more accessible opportunity to acquire a genuine survivor of the period.

An attractive and certified 1865 Three Dollar gold piece, rich in historical resonance and always in demand as a scarce Civil War type.
