Description / 1874 50C Arrows Liberty Seated Half Dollar PCGS MS65

A handsome Gem example of the short-lived Arrows subtype, this 1874 Liberty Seated Half Dollar represents the final year of a distinctive two-year design modification and offers exceptional type appeal in PCGS MS65.

Struck at Philadelphia, the obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, supporting a Union shield inscribed LIBERTY while holding a pole topped with a cap. Thirteen stars encircle the figure, with prominent arrowheads flanking the date 1874 below. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll above and HALF DOL. below. The Arrows motif marks the reduced statutory weight adopted in 1873, making this subtype an important and easily recognized issue within the Seated Liberty half dollar series.

The present coin is attractively preserved for the grade, with sharp definition throughout the major design elements and a pleasing overall balance of silver-white brilliance and soft champagne-gold peripheral toning. Luster remains ample and satiny beneath the color, particularly across the open fields and the reverse eagle. Surface preservation is solid for the Gem level, with only minor ticks and light scattered marks consistent with the assigned grade. The eye appeal is notably strong, enhanced by the delicate warm accents near the rims and the clean, well-struck central devices.

The 1874 Arrows Half Dollar is the second and final year of this popular subtype. Although the date itself is more available than its 1873 counterpart, the issue enjoys enduring demand because it serves both as a date collectible and as a representative type coin of the Arrows design. That dual demand has long supported a strong market for high-grade survivors, particularly those with original surfaces and pleasing coloration. Within the broader Seated Liberty series, the With Arrows design occupies an important place as a transitional federal coinage type tied directly to changes in weight standards during the 1870s.

With a mintage of 2,359,600 pieces, the date is not rare in an absolute sense, but true Gem examples are distinctly elusive. PCGS reports a population of just 15 coins in MS65, with only 12 graded finer, underscoring the limited availability of certified examples at this level and above. For collectors pursuing a high-grade Seated Liberty type set or an advanced half dollar cabinet, this population profile adds meaningful exclusivity.

Well-chosen for both technical quality and visual appeal, this 1874 Arrows Liberty Seated Half Dollar is a desirable Gem representative of one of the most collected transitional types in 19th-century U.S. silver coinage.
