Description / 1875-S 50C Liberty Seated Half Dollar PCGS MS66
A superb Gem representative of the San Francisco Seated Liberty half dollar coinage, this 1875-S Half Dollar is certified PCGS MS66 and offers the combination of high technical quality, frosty luster, and pleasing originality that advanced type and date collectors prize.
The obverse features Liberty seated left upon a rock, supporting a Union shield inscribed LIBERTY and holding a staff topped by a cap, with thirteen stars around and the date 1875 below. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle with shield grasps an olive branch and arrows beneath the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with HALF DOL. at the base; the mintmark S appears below the eagle. The design is the familiar and enduring Seated Liberty motif of Christian Gobrecht, one of the most collected and historically resonant types in 19th-century United States silver coinage.
At the MS66 level, this piece stands firmly in the Gem category, and the eye appeal visible in the images is fully in keeping with the grade. The surfaces are notably well preserved, with only minimal abrasions for the issue and a clean overall appearance. Soft silver-gray patina overlays bright underlying mint frost, producing an attractive, natural presentation. Luster appears strong on both sides, and the strike is especially appealing for the date, with better-than-average definition in the stars and central devices. The reverse eagle displays sharp feather detail, while Liberty’s gown folds and shield lines are clearly rendered.
The 1875-S is a popular late-date entry in the Seated Liberty half dollar series, struck at the San Francisco Mint during a period when large quantities of silver coinage were needed to support Western commerce and circulation. With a mintage of 3,200,000 pieces, it is not rare as a date in circulated grades, nor does it usually command a premium at lower Mint State levels. Yet this issue becomes significantly more elusive at the upper end of the grading spectrum, where quality, originality, and strike all matter considerably to discerning collectors. As specialists know, strike quality on 1875-S half dollars can vary, particularly at the stars, making sharply detailed examples especially desirable.
Certified examples in this elite grade tier are scarce. PCGS reports a population of just 28 pieces in MS66, with only 5 finer. That sub-100 population is important in market terms, confirming that while the date is obtainable, truly Gem survivors of this caliber are a much smaller and more competitive subset. For collectors assembling a high-grade Seated Liberty half dollar set, a premium type cabinet, or a refined San Francisco Mint silver collection, this coin offers strong registry and crossover appeal.
An impressively preserved and visually appealing Gem, this 1875-S Seated Liberty Half Dollar stands as a highly desirable example of a classic 19th-century American silver type.
