Description / 1886 G$1 Gold Dollar PCGS PR65CAM

A scarce and visually compelling Proof Gold Dollar, this 1886 Indian Princess Head type is certified PCGS PR65 Cameo, a coveted survivor from a tiny proof mintage and one of the more elusive late-date issues in the series.

Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the obverse presents Longacre’s distinctive Indian Princess portrait facing left, crowned in a feathered headdress and encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The reverse features the denomination and date, 1 DOLLAR 1886, framed within the familiar agricultural wreath tied below. The type is among the most recognizable of all classic U.S. gold issues, combining diminutive format with refined engraving and unmistakable 19th-century character.

The present example fully merits its PR65CAM designation. Boldly struck throughout, it displays reflective golden fields set against frosted design elements, producing the pleasing contrast expected of the Cameo designation. Surfaces appear notably well preserved for the grade, with strong visual balance and an attractive warm yellow-gold color. The fields show the mirrored finish sought by proof specialists, while the devices retain sharp definition in the portrait, lettering, and wreath. Overall eye appeal is especially strong, with the kind of flash and precision that make proof gold so desirable in hand.

The Gold Dollar series has long held broad appeal among collectors of classic United States coinage, and proof examples occupy a particularly important niche within that market. By 1886, the denomination had largely become a specialty issue produced in very limited numbers for collectors rather than for meaningful commercial circulation. As such, late-date proof gold dollars represent the culmination of the denomination’s evolution, combining historic significance with intentionally careful manufacture.

With a proof mintage of just 1,016 pieces, the 1886 is decidedly low-mintage by any standard of U.S. federal gold. Certified examples with Cameo contrast are much scarcer still. PCGS reports a population of only 10 in PR65CAM, with just 11 finer, underscoring the issue’s select status in this format and grade tier. For collectors assembling a high-end proof type set, a specialized gold dollar run, or a cabinet of late 19th-century proof gold, this piece offers an appealing blend of rarity, quality, and market desirability.

A handsome and scarce proof-only survivor of a classic American gold denomination, this 1886 Gold Dollar stands as an impressive acquisition for the advanced collector.
