Description / 1888 50C Liberty Seated Half Dollar PCGS MS66
Conditionally scarce in gem preservation, this 1888 Liberty Seated Half Dollar is a finely certified PCGS MS66 example, further endorsed by CAC for solid quality within the grade.
The obverse displays Christian Gobrecht’s enduring Seated Liberty motif: Liberty seated left upon a rock, supporting a Union shield inscribed LIBERTY and holding a staff surmounted by a cap, all surrounded by thirteen stars with the date 1888 below. The reverse presents the heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows, encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with HALF DOL. at the base. Struck at Philadelphia and lacking a mintmark, this issue represents the final decade of the long-running Liberty Seated half dollar series.
At the MS66 level, the present coin offers the refined surface quality and superior visual balance advanced collectors expect. The strike is crisp overall, with strong definition in Liberty’s drapery and the reverse eagle’s central details. Soft silver-gray centers are enlivened by delicate peripheral iridescence, with pale champagne, rose, and blue-gold toning accents visible near the rims. Luster appears satiny to reflective in character, consistent with the issue’s often prooflike presentation, and the fields remain notably clean for the designation. Eye appeal is both elegant and understated, exactly the sort of aesthetic that has long attracted specialists to this underrated date.
The 1888 half dollar occupies an intriguing position in the Liberty Seated series. Although it is the highest-mintage business-strike half dollar of the 1880s, the reported output of just 12,000 pieces is minuscule by broader U.S. coinage standards. This tiny production helps explain why the issue is so avidly pursued today, especially in Mint State. Many examples show deeply reflective or prooflike surfaces, occasionally leading to confusion with Proof strikings, and the date has long been appreciated by connoisseurs for this distinctive appearance. As a late-series Philadelphia issue from an era of limited silver coinage production, it enjoys strong demand from both type collectors and dedicated Seated Liberty specialists.
Certified populations confirm its select status in high grade. PCGS reports a population of just 25 examples in MS66, with only 13 finer. While obtainable in lower Mint State levels, true gem and near-superb pieces become decidedly more elusive, and the CAC approval adds another layer of selectivity for buyers who prioritize premium quality. This is not a key-date in the absolute sense, but it is unquestionably a better late-date issue and a significant condition rarity at this level.
A handsome, low-mintage Philadelphia Seated half with gem technical merit, attractive natural toning, and CAC validation, this 1888 MS66 is a compelling opportunity for the advanced collector of classic United States silver coinage.
