Description / 1913 $5 Indian Head PCGS MS65
Conditionally rare in Gem Mint State, this 1913 Indian Head Half Eagle is a highly appealing Philadelphia issue certified PCGS MS65, combining strong visual quality with solid demand from advanced gold type and series collectors.
Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the Indian Head Half Eagle is among the most distinctive motifs in United States coinage, notable for its innovative incuse design. The obverse features a left-facing Native American chief wearing a full feathered headdress, with LIBERTY above and the date 1913 below, all rendered in sunken relief. The reverse presents a standing eagle perched on a bundle of arrows entwined with an olive branch, encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE DOLLARS, with E PLURIBUS UNUM at left and IN GOD WE TRUST at right. Struck at Philadelphia, this example bears no mintmark, as expected for the issue.
At the Gem level, the 1913 becomes a far more elusive coin than its more available lower Mint State counterparts. This MS65 specimen displays the characteristics specialists seek in the date: a sharp overall strike, pleasing finely granular surfaces, and vibrant mint luster flowing across both sides. The color is especially attractive, showing rich yellow-gold to medium orange-gold hues with warm, even originality. Surface preservation appears notably strong for the type, with clean fields and well-defined central motifs supporting the certified grade. Overall eye appeal is exceptional, and the coin presents as one of the more attractive high-grade representatives of this challenging issue.
Within the Indian Head Half Eagle series, the 1913 is regarded as comparable to the 1912 in overall rarity and condition rarity. While examples through MS63 can be obtained without great difficulty, the issue becomes decidedly scarce in MS64 and especially elusive in MS65. Above that level, the date enters genuinely rarefied territory, as is true for much of the Pratt half eagle series. Collectors have long appreciated these incuse gold pieces for their bold artistry, short production span, and unconventional fabric, all of which ensure lasting popularity.
PCGS reports a population of just 70 pieces in MS65, with only 9 certified finer, underscoring the issue’s limited availability at this level. That makes this coin an important opportunity for collectors seeking a premium-quality example without moving into the extreme rarity and cost of the finest-known tier. As a certified Gem from a series with broad collector loyalty, it offers both numismatic substance and strong market appeal.
A choice, original, and conditionally scarce 1913 Indian Head Half Eagle, this PCGS MS65 example is a compelling acquisition for the advanced type collector, gold specialist, or registry-minded buyer.
