Description / 1914-D $2.50 Indian Head PCGS MS63+
A pleasing Mint State example of a better-date Denver Indian Quarter Eagle, certified PCGS MS63+.
Struck at the Denver Mint in 1914, this $2.50 Indian Head gold piece is a handsome representative of Bela Lyon Pratt’s celebrated incuse design. The obverse features the left-facing portrait of a Native American chief in full feathered headdress, with LIBERTY above and the date 1914 below. The reverse presents a standing eagle perched on a bundle of arrows entwined with an olive branch, encircled by the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM, with the denomination 2 1/2 DOLLARS below. As with all Indian Head quarter eagles of the type, the design elements are sunken below the fields, giving the issue its distinctive and instantly recognizable appearance.
PCGS has assigned this example a grade of MS63+, placing it solidly in the Choice Mint State category with an added measure of quality for the grade. The surfaces display attractive yellow-gold color with warm, slightly deeper golden accents at the margins and protected areas. Luster remains vibrant, and the coin presents well for the assigned level, with pleasing overall eye appeal. The strike appears generally sharp, with the central portrait and reverse eagle well defined, while the surfaces show the moderate marks and abrasions expected of a gold issue at this grade level without distracting from its strong visual presence.
The Indian Head quarter eagle series, struck from 1908 through 1929, enjoys enduring popularity among collectors of classic United States gold. Pratt’s innovative incuse treatment marked a dramatic departure from traditional raised-relief coinage and remains one of the most artistically distinctive designs in American numismatics. Denver Mint issues are especially important within the series, and the 1914-D is recognized as a better-date coin that becomes notably more challenging in Choice Mint State and finer preservation.
Within the series, the 1914-D holds strong collector interest as a semi-key issue. It is far scarcer than many more available dates and is consistently in demand from both type buyers seeking a premium example and series specialists assembling high-grade sets. Coins certified at the MS63+ level occupy an appealing position in the market, offering a desirable balance of condition rarity, eye appeal, and relative value.
An attractive certified 1914-D Indian Quarter Eagle with strong collector appeal, this is an excellent opportunity to acquire a better-date classic U.S. gold piece in Choice Mint State preservation.
