Description / 1915 $2.50 Indian Head PCGS MS64+
A premium near-Gem representative of a celebrated American gold type, this 1915 Indian Head Quarter Eagle is certified PCGS MS64+ and offers strong visual appeal for the advanced type or date collector.
Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt and struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the Indian Head Quarter Eagle is one of the most innovative issues in United States numismatics. The obverse features a left-facing Native American portrait in full headdress, framed by 13 stars, with LIBERTY above and the date 1915 below. Pratt’s initials appear at the truncation. The reverse displays a standing eagle perched on a bundle of arrows entwined with olive branches, surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2 1/2 DOLLARS. As a member of the distinctive incuse gold series, the design elements are recessed below the field, giving the type its immediately recognizable appearance and enduring collector appeal.
In MS64+, this example resides at the upper end of the Choice Mint State range, approaching full Gem status. The surfaces present an attractive golden coloration with lively mint luster and notably pleasing overall freshness. Design detail appears sharply rendered for the issue, with strong definition through the headdress feathers and the eagle’s plumage. The fields and raised rims show the quality expected at this level, while the “plus” designation confirms superior eye appeal and surface preservation within the assigned numeric grade.
The Indian Head Quarter Eagle series, issued from 1908 through 1929 with interruptions, remains one of the most popular 20th-century U.S. gold series. Pratt’s incuse concept was a bold departure from traditional coinage and stands as a landmark of the artistic renaissance of early modern American coin design. Philadelphia examples such as this 1915 issue are especially desirable as representative pieces of the type, combining historic artistry with broad collector recognition.
The 1915 quarter eagle is a better collected date within this short and highly popular series, sought after both by type buyers and by those assembling complete runs of Indian Head gold. Mint State survivors are consistently in demand, and examples certified at the cusp of Gem quality are especially compelling for collectors who value premium eye appeal without entering the much more competitive higher-grade tier.
An attractive, high-end Mint State 1915 Indian Head Quarter Eagle, ideal for the collector seeking a handsome and desirable example of this iconic U.S. gold design.
