Description / 1915 Indian $2.50 NGC MS63

A lustrous Mint State representative of a classic 20th-century gold type, this 1915 Indian Head Quarter Eagle is certified NGC MS63 and offers strong collector appeal as a boldly designed Bela Lyon Pratt issue from the Philadelphia Mint.

The Indian Head $2.50 gold piece, struck from 1908 through 1929, remains one of the most innovative and instantly recognizable designs in American numismatics. The obverse features a left-facing Native American portrait wearing a full feathered headdress, with LIBERTY above, stars around the border, and the date 1915 below. On the reverse, a standing eagle is perched on a bundle of arrows entwined with an olive branch, accompanied by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination 2 1/2 DOLLARS. As with the type as a whole, the design is distinguished by its incuse, or sunken, devices and legends, a striking departure from the raised-relief format used on most United States coinage.

Graded MS63 by NGC, this example displays the pleasing visual character expected of a Choice Uncirculated coin. The surfaces show warm golden-orange color with bright, satiny to softly frosted luster evident across both sides. Design elements are well defined for the issue, with the portrait, headdress details, and reverse eagle exhibiting solid overall sharpness. Moderate scattered marks are consistent with the assigned grade, yet the coin retains an attractive and original appearance that should satisfy type collectors and gold specialists alike.

The Indian Quarter Eagle series enjoys enduring popularity due to its short but historic run, distinctive incuse format, and direct association with the artistic renaissance of early 20th-century U.S. coinage. Pratt’s design, introduced during the same era that produced the Saint-Gaudens double eagle and other celebrated types, broke sharply with convention and remains a centerpiece of any advanced gold type set. Philadelphia issues such as this 1915 date are especially desirable for collectors seeking attractive Mint State examples of this iconic design without the prohibitive cost of the rarest dates.

Within the series, the 1915 is a better-collected Philadelphia issue that is always in demand in problem-free Mint State preservation. Certified examples in MS63 occupy a particularly desirable collecting tier, combining strong eye appeal, full Mint State status, and relative affordability compared with finer-grade pieces. For collectors assembling a 20th-century gold type set, an Indian Head Quarter Eagle in Choice Mint State is a foundational acquisition.

A handsome and historically important incuse gold coin, this 1915 Indian Head Quarter Eagle NGC MS63 represents an excellent opportunity to acquire one of the most distinctive and beloved designs in the United States series.
