Description / 1915 Indian $5 NGC MS65
A superb Gem example of the classic 1915 Indian Head Half Eagle, certified NGC MS65 and presenting the rich, original orange-gold color so prized for this distinctive incuse design type.
Struck at Philadelphia, this $5 gold piece belongs to Bela Lyon Pratt’s innovative Indian Head series, introduced in 1908 and immediately set apart from all earlier United States coinage by its recessed, or incuse, devices. The obverse features a left-facing Native American chief wearing a full feathered headdress, encircled by stars, with the date 1915 below. On the reverse, a stately eagle stands upon a bundle of arrows entwined with an olive branch, accompanied by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination FIVE DOLLARS.
In Mint State 65, this piece resides firmly in the Gem category, a level at which the type begins to show the full visual appeal intended by the design. The surfaces seen here are notably well preserved, with strong luster flowing across both sides and an attractive, even orange-gold appearance. The strike is sharp for the issue, with pleasing definition through the chief’s headdress and the reverse eagle’s wing and leg detail. As expected for a premium certified example, abrasions are minimal and the overall presentation is highly attractive.
The Indian Head Half Eagle remains one of the most popular 20th-century U.S. gold series, admired equally for its artistic boldness and its unusual incuse format. Pratt’s design, created under the influence of President Theodore Roosevelt’s campaign to beautify American coinage, broke dramatically from traditional raised-relief coinage and remains instantly recognizable more than a century later. The 1915 issue is a Philadelphia Mint product from the later years of the series and is sought after both by type collectors and by advanced date-and-mint specialists assembling high-grade sets.
Within the series, the 1915 Indian $5 enjoys steady collector demand, particularly in Gem Mint State grades where originality, color, and surface quality become increasingly important. Certified examples at the MS65 level represent an especially desirable balance of quality and collectibility, offering strong eye appeal and elite preservation without reaching the rarity and cost levels of the finest certified pieces. For collectors of classic U.S. gold, this is a compelling and highly marketable example of a beloved design type.
An impressive Gem 1915 Indian Head Half Eagle, combining historical importance, distinctive design, and premium visual appeal in a grade that commands respect in any advanced U.S. gold cabinet.
